Koi Ponds & Gardens
Winter in Colorado is a wonderful landscape of snow and sunshine. It is sad, but time to put our pond to sleep. The koi aren’t interested in coming up to say hi and find out what treats we will feed them. They are barely moving in the bottom of the pond. But what a fun learning year this has been for us. This is our second year with our pond and I’m sure we have done just about everything wrong you could do.

We hired our pond to be built in the spring of 1998. We knew we wanted to take advantage of the steep grade of our lot from front to back, by creating a stream that flowed into a pond at the bottom, but beyond that, we left the design to the landscaper. MISTAKE! We have rearranged and or replaced every rock in our pond and stream since the original installation. Three pumps later we have the correct rise of water and flow of the stream. After two filters, the water is clear. But despite all the trials and tribulations, we are hooked on ponding.

Last autumn the planting area around the pond was completely bare. This spring our goal was to make this area a mountain stream with wild flowers, aspen and pine. We especially wanted to create a home for the birds and butterflies. It’s a long-term project but what a difference a growing season makes! The finches, red wing black birds and humming birds love our little sanctuary and by the end of the summer, we could see butterflies by the stream every day.

Our pond’s peaceful, serene beauty is a constant source of enjoyment to everyone in the family. We have named most of our fish and enjoy watching them grow and play in the pond. The birds and butterflies are a special feature we never even thought of when we began this project two years ago.

Hope you enjoy some of our "pond under construction" pictures, call or e-mail us anytime if you would like to discuss starting a pond or just talking about your pond. We are waiting impatiently for spring, until then, check out some of our favorite pond & koi web sites.
